Déborah Oliveros

Dr. Deborah Oliveros is a Mexican Mathematician interested in Discrete and Computational Geometry, as well as in Convexity. Her main contributions follow paths on Tverberg and Helly-type Problems, Transversal Theory, Convex and Abstract Polytopes and Construction of Bodies of Constant Width. She received her Ph.D. from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary, in Canada, where she stayed for 8 years. She is currently a full-time professor at the Instituto de Matemáticas at UNAM.
Deborah is the author of several research papers and co-author of the book “Bodies of Constant Width”, published in 2019 by Birkhäuser. Since 1994, Deborah has continued teaching at UNAM, at the Faculty of Sciences; at the University of Calgary in Canada; in California at Davis, and at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, México. Currently she has designed, led and coordinated the new B.A. degree in Mathematics at the Escuela Nacional de Estudios Superiores, of Juriquilla, Querétaro.
Dr. Oliveros has been bestowed with several awards and memberships, such as the Sotero Prieto award for the best B.A. Thesis (1993). She also received the Gabino Barreda medal for the best average in M.A. (1997). In March 2014, she got the “Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz” merit award for the International Women’s Day. That same year she entered the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias. In 2015, she obtained the “Profesora Visitante Lluis Santaló” Scholarship at the CRM (Centre de Reserca Matemàtica) in Barcelona, Spain.
Dr. Oliveros is founder and director, and currently headmistress of the Unidad del Instituto de Matemáticas, Campus Juriquilla, in Querétaro. She’s a member of the Institute’s Internal Council, and of the Academic Council. She also coordinates the Commission for Gender Equality at the Institute since 2021.
Deborah has always enjoyed the outdoors and having animal companions. While in Canada, she was a volunteer at the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Today, living in Querétaro, México, she has a nice garden which she enjoys enormously. She enjoys gardening, and walking with her dogs.
From classical geometry to new constructions of bodies of constant width.

​Bodies of constant width are geometric objects with incredible properties that have fascinated mathematicians from centuries; L. Euler for instance, studied them under the name of “orbiforms” from the Latin word circle-shaped curves. Their properties have not only contributed in generating great applications in the areas of engineering, design and art, but have also motivated the development of great mathematics with unimaginable possibilities that have relation with many interesting open questions.
